Space Hulk is up for sale!

Space hulk box

As I posted recently on the warseer forums, I have decided to sell off some of my pile of gaming stuff that is not used as much as others are.

As you can see from the pictures, packed into the 1st edition box of Space Hulk is not only the 1st edition components, but also the 2nd edition components, along with the two expansions for the 1st edition of Deathwing and Genestealer. There are no miniatures, and from the weight you need to be aware that it will be expensive to ship overseas. Pickup can be arranged from Sydney, or shipped if you so desire. The pieces are all in very good condition.

Make a reasonable offer.

Something Modhail wrote in response to one of my comments on his blog

April 15th, 2008 by Bucho

Modhails space hulk project website (click on his name below to check it out) has some totally awe inspiring pieces of 3D terrain for space hulk, and he responded to one of my comments with the below. (edited so it makes a little bit more sense away from the comment discussion)

modhail Says:

I’ll just give a few tips to get you by, until I can start working on the beast again:

-PLAN! I spent 3 months just planning what I wanted/needed, discussing how best to go about it, gathering references, collecting bits to use for scenery.
-Make sure you get your measurements straight! You don’t want to end up with corridor sections that are too large or too small… Don’t forget to figure for the thickness of the details you will add to the walls
-Realise things of this size and detail are long term projects, don’t expect to get it all finished in one summer. I don’t expect to finish this beast before 2010…
-Don’t forget this is fun, don’t let it become a chore.
;-)

As to detailing:
-Get more reference material. The more you have, the more ideas you’ll get. Leaf throught all Games workhop publications you have, looking at artwork and pictures of terrain. Look at industrial architecture, architecture in general, etc. Get the Aliens trilogy and look at all the set photo’s. Do this all with a sketchbook at hand…
-Learn to think in layers and simple shapes. Most detail can be made by putting several layers of material on top of each other, or by combining several simple shapes. Those large vent stack, for example, are just the caps from bottles of sportsdrinks, stuck onto PVC tubing… This is camouflaged by adding some tubes and riveted bands of mayo tube foil…
-Stock up on plastic tubing of different sizes. This projects consumes tubing like crazy!
-Build a stockpile of odd bits and bobs. The most seemingly useless stuff can suddenly become awesome if glued into a space hulk at the right place and painted over. Take for example the vent stacks mentioned earlier. And the moulding along the top of the corridors with the massive tubes? Those are just plastic ice cream sticks…

Some very helpful tips in there. And I will be adding some of the extra bits he talks about to my rather HUGE stockpile of bits and pieces ready for any terrain building I do.

If anyone has any other tips, just drop them in the comment section so we can all share in them.

Genestealer Conversion - Flesh Hooks

March 30th, 2008 by Bucho

Recently I have been looking at genestealers in a new light. (checkout my genestealer hybrids post). But I would also wanted to add somemore genestealers, I wanted them to stand out from the standard ones everyone else uses.

So a unit upgrade is in order! Looking at everyone elses ideas has led me to try and come up with something different, inparticular how the unit upgrade is shown on the models. To this end I picked flesh hooks, why them? Well I want them for a kill team game, and they can still be standard genestealers for space hulk. So I thought about how to show the hooks. The hooks mounted on the chest look odd, and in the mouth are cool, but I have seen them done that way plenty of times. So I decided to go with them in their hands! Yep, spiderman style.

This I hope will make them stand out in games. A little bit more than if I had had simply done the hooks in mouth like everyone else.

Genestealer Hybrids

March 24th, 2008 by Bucho

With the recent release of the bell of lost souls genestealer cult codex, and the rumours I have been hearing of a spce huk revisit, it has been ticking over in the back of my mind that I should dig out my old copy of 1st edition space hulk with its expansions. The genestealer expansion with its hybrids was always a fun game, with the random weapons causing no end of shock, or in some cases, hilarity.

Of course, my memories focus on one game where some VERY lucky rolling for a hybrid with a las-pistol. Starting the turn by killing one of the terminators with the pistol, followed by killing I think 5 more terminators with a lightning arc psychic power leaving one sole librarian.

The hybrid died in the next marine turn, and the librarian went on to finish the mission, closing all the bulkheads and killing in excess of a hundred stealers that game.

So with that in mind, I saw the new plastic ghouls for the vampire counts and I thought that with a few swaps with some gaunts and stealers we may have some nice looking hybrids. Then it would simply take a few weapons pulled out of the bits box and a few bits of tech and clothes added with the green stuff to leave me with some awesome hybrids ready for hulk fighting.

The added bonus is they would make for interesting enemies in necromunda, 40k and kill team games. And for the boss for kill team, even though there are normal monsters, one of the hybrids converted to have a tentacle mouth and a few pieces of carapace shell along with a big weapon would certainly make for an iconic character to fight against.

Wether you use the BOLS rules or use ‘counts as’ to get them into other games, the fun is in resurrecting a long dead foe for your games.

Anything that adds flavour and enjoyment to your games has to be a good thing. If rumours of a new hulk game coming turn out to be true, this may be a good way to get an early start. (or may just want some interesting models to paint for the next golden demon contest)

Space Hulk Rumour

March 24th, 2008 by Bucho

Rumour has it that the new space hulk/necromunda box set will be a box to get people into the larger systems. How this is worked into miniature wise it is anyone’s guess. But there was talk of plastic pieces for the terrain/corridors.

If this IS the case, we may see a lot of interesting terrain conversions and ‘themed’ terrain.

Hopefully it will see the light of day sooner rather than later. It may end up using the rumoured special hulk/necro rules in the new 5th edition of the rules. We wait with baited breath.
