Prone models cover save

Rumour has it that there is to be an option to automatically be pinned to take a cover save against attacks.

Our own house rules have been that anyone can claim a light cover save for being prone. The only clincher is that you have to have them modeled prone. I have a squad of space marines all crawling or lying down, and our house rules are basically that you can get the cover save if you are prone, BUT you cannot initiate close combat, nor can you sprint or make fleet moves.

It may not sound like much, but there have been games where that save has made the difference between victory and defeat.

Plus, the models look really cool, and make for an interesting conversion project. (which any army can do)

Terrain – random generation

Ever get sick of the same old layout of the battlefield for your games? Well, this is the system we came up with (house rules).Simply divide the table into zones, we normally use six to eight. Then roll a dice for each of the areas.

  1. 1. Open / craters / rubble / debris
  2. 2. Building ruin up to one storey
  3. 3. Building ruin up to two stories
  4. 4. Building ruin up to three stories
  5. 5. Feature terrain* / fortified building
  6. 6. Special

*Can be city sign, courtyard, hab block, temple, graveyard, park with statue, etc.

Special Result

  1. 1. Carpark / tip / wreckers yard
  2. 2. warehouse / factory / power station
  3. 3. tower / fort / police station
  4. 4. landing pad / overgrown garden
  5. 5. visitors choice / attacker choice**
  6. 6. homeside choice / defender choice**

*Can be a terrain piece matched to their army, or anything in the terrain collection they want. The alternative is to build up a region you know, like your local shops, your street, or from pictures like StalingradFor other types of terrain, simply replace the listed items with similar things from your collection. For example:

Jungle

  1. 1. open / grassland
  2. 2. high grass / shrubs (6+ cover save)
  3. 3. trees (copse or stand) (5+ cover save)
  4. 4. Thick scrub / jungle (4+ cover save)
  5. 5. Feature – swamp / venus mantrap / etc
  6. 6. Special

Jungle Special

  1. 1. River
  2. 2. overgrown ruin
  3. 3. logging station / mineworks
  4. 4. quarry / tip / landing pad / plantation
  5. 5. visitor choice
  6. 6. homeside choice

This makes for an interesting way of randomly generating your battlefields. And also makes sure no one is setting the table to suit their own army every time. It also can be changed to add any new features that you add to your collection as you build your terrain.

Genestealer Conversion – Flesh Hooks

Recently I have been looking at genestealers in a new light. (checkout my genestealer hybrids post). But I would also wanted to add somemore genestealers, I wanted them to stand out from the standard ones everyone else uses.

So a unit upgrade is in order! Looking at everyone elses ideas has led me to try and come up with something different, inparticular how the unit upgrade is shown on the models. To this end I picked flesh hooks, why them? Well I want them for a kill team game, and they can still be standard genestealers for space hulk. So I thought about how to show the hooks. The hooks mounted on the chest look odd, and in the mouth are cool, but I have seen them done that way plenty of times. So I decided to go with them in their hands! Yep, spiderman style.

This I hope will make them stand out in games. A little bit more than if I had had simply done the hooks in mouth like everyone else.

Genestealer Hybrids

With the recent release of the bell of lost souls genestealer cult codex, and the rumours I have been hearing of a spce huk revisit, it has been ticking over in the back of my mind that I should dig out my old copy of 1st edition space hulk with its expansions. The genestealer expansion with its hybrids was always a fun game, with the random weapons causing no end of shock, or in some cases, hilarity.

Of course, my memories focus on one game where some VERY lucky rolling for a hybrid with a las-pistol. Starting the turn by killing one of the terminators with the pistol, followed by killing I think 5 more terminators with a lightning arc psychic power leaving one sole librarian.

The hybrid died in the next marine turn, and the librarian went on to finish the mission, closing all the bulkheads and killing in excess of a hundred stealers that game.

So with that in mind, I saw the new plastic ghouls for the vampire counts and I thought that with a few swaps with some gaunts and stealers we may have some nice looking hybrids. Then it would simply take a few weapons pulled out of the bits box and a few bits of tech and clothes added with the green stuff to leave me with some awesome hybrids ready for hulk fighting.

The added bonus is they would make for interesting enemies in necromunda, 40k and kill team games. And for the boss for kill team, even though there are normal monsters, one of the hybrids converted to have a tentacle mouth and a few pieces of carapace shell along with a big weapon would certainly make for an iconic character to fight against.

Wether you use the BOLS rules or use ‘counts as’ to get them into other games, the fun is in resurrecting a long dead foe for your games.

Anything that adds flavour and enjoyment to your games has to be a good thing. If rumours of a new hulk game coming turn out to be true, this may be a good way to get an early start. (or may just want some interesting models to paint for the next golden demon contest)
